While some alarms can be plugged directly into an electrical outlet, others operate on batteries. Consequently, wireless alarm systems require regular battery changes to ensure they continue running at optimal performance. Here are four signs it’s time to replace the batteries in your system and protect your Calgary home or business.

  1. You hear beeping. Many alarm systems will beep when the battery power is low. You may hear a beep every few hours or once a day when the system runs its automatic battery test.

  2. You keep having false alarms. Do you find your security alarm persistently gets triggered for seemingly no reason? It could be a low battery. Low battery power can sometimes cause a false alarm at random times of the day or night.

  3. You see a warning light or message. Many alarm systems have warning lights that indicate an issue. For example, the keypad on DSC alarms has a yellow light that illuminates when there’s a problem. Some alarm keypads have LCD displays that provide a printout with the words “LOW BATT” or “LB” to indicate the battery needs to be replaced.

  4. You haven’t replaced the battery in over three years. The batteries in most modern alarm systems last between three and five years. However, the lifespan can vary depending on how much energy the system requires to power every feature. For instance, systems with motion sensors tend to be better at conserving energy, allowing the batteries to last an average of five years. It’s best to check your system batteries regularly to avoid an outage.

Finally, ensure the replacement batteries you use are the same type and capacity as the ones you’re changing out.

Your alarm system should protect you and your property, but needless alerts can undermine your peace of mind. If your DSC alarm system is beeping persistently or otherwise indicating a problem, a professional can help you get your alarm systems back in order.
