HOW TO DETER WOULD-BE BURGLARS

Lighting in a beautiful house

Everyone wants to feel safe in their home, but the reality is that break-ins happen often. Luckily, there are several preventive measures you can take to dissuade potential intruders.

DON’T CREATE HIDING PLACES

Your landscaping can either discourage intruders or hinder your security efforts. A well-maintained yard with plenty of open spaces will give prospective burglars fewer places to hide. While a front gate will make your home less accessible, a tightly spaced picket fence can conceal lurkers.

Make sure your doors and windows aren’t obstructed by tall or overgrown bushes. Similarly, a dense shrub in front of your living room window will allow a burglar to force the latch without fear of being seen.

MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU’RE HOME

Burglars are more likely to skip your house if they think there’s someone inside. Consider leaving the TV or radio on when you run errands. If you’re going to be away overnight, put a few lights on timers to make it look like there are people around. Alternatively, install a home automation system to control your lights and appliances remotely.

If you’ll be out of town for a while, don’t post about your trip on social media until you return. To make the place look occupied, ask a neighbour to collect your mail and maybe even mow the lawn while you’re away.

CATCH INTRUDERS OFF GUARD

Burglars typically want to avoid attracting attention, so shine a literal spotlight on them. Motion sensor lights can surprise would-be intruders and scare them off. This equipment also suggests the presence of further security measures.

Motion sensor lights will also alert your neighbours to suspicious activity, particularly if they know that you’re not home. Additionally, keep your entryways lit at all times with lights installed on your front porch and back deck.

SHOW OFF YOUR SECURITY SYSTEM

There are plenty of tricks to discourage would-be burglars, but the most effective way to prevent a break-in and keep your household safe is to install a security system. Outdoor security cameras monitor your property, but they also let prospective intruders know that they’re being watched. Security company yard signs and stickers also indicate that your home isn’t an easy target.
