Time is running out to access grants from the provincial government under the Alberta Security Infrastructure Program (ASIP). With funding for improved security systems, the program protects religious and cultural organizations from hate-related crimes. The deadline to apply is November 10, 2021. Here’s what you need to know.
ORGANIZATIONS AND GROUPS THAT CAN APPLY FOR THE ALBERTA SECURITY INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM
Applicants must be a registered, not-for-profit charity or a “facility or organization that serves communities at risk of hate or bias-motivated crimes or incidents.” Eligible facilities include:
Places of worship such as temples, churches, synagogues, gurdwaras and mosques
Provincially and territorially recognized private educational institutions
Community and friendship centres
Cemeteries
Shelters
Ceremonial facilities and monuments
Storefronts of not-for-profit organization
In announcing the program, Alberta’s justice minister Kaycee Madu noted that it would help prevent hate crimes before they occur because security systems are a deterrent for would-be vandals and hate-motivated criminals.
“The Alberta Security Infrastructure Program will empower Albertans and their communities by providing additional layers of protection for those in need. Empowered communities are safe communities,” he said.
WHAT YOU CAN USE THE ALBERTA SECURITY INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM GRANT FOR
The province is making $500,000 available for the program in 2021. Up to $10,000 is available for each successful applicant for a professional security assessment or education and training. Another $90,000 per applicant can go to security improvements such as, installing:
CCTV cameras
Security equipment and hardware such as alarm systems and motion detectors
Fencing and gates
Successful applicants aren’t required to match the funding. A further $1 million will be made available for the program in 2022.
