Cameras are a key part of your business’s security system, but they won’t be much help if they’re poorly placed. Here are five common security camera mistakes it’s best to avoid.
1. Bad lighting
You need to be very careful when placing a security camera. Just like any other type of video recording equipment, it’s very sensitive to lighting. You’ll have to make sure there isn’t too much backlighting, otherwise, you’ll only get silhouettes and won’t be able to make out any details. For instance, make sure the camera that records your entrance can’t be blinded by headlights.
2. Poor angle
There’s a trade-off between covering more ground and providing enough detail to allow for the identification of intruders or shoplifters. Ideally, you’ll want to position your cameras roughly as close to head level as possible, as a more plunging angle will make it hard to see faces. On the other hand, high angles are good for covering a large space. The best thing to do is to combine both.
3. Wrong cameras
You really shouldn’t skimp on security cameras. Poor-quality equipment won’t provide clear images and will ultimately be useless if you do end up needing to review the footage. As is the case with many things, you get what you pay for. Investing in a quality CCTV system with good cameras is more economical in the long run.
4. DIY installation
A commercial surveillance system is only as good as the team that installs it, and unless you’re a trained professional, it’s better to leave this job to the experts. The last thing you want is your camera system failing because it wasn’t installed properly.
5. Forgetting cameras aren’t everything
Cameras act as an effective deterrent, and they may allow you to identify the perpetrator should your business be targeted by a thief or vandal. However, there’s much more to commercial security than just cameras. For instance, installing an access control system will allow you to prevent unauthorized people from entering the premises and to record the comings and goings of your employees.
