2. Update the firmware regularly
Surveillance camera manufacturers routinely release firmware updates that fix software bugs and patch security vulnerabilities. While some devices automatically download these updates, others don’t. Get into the habit of regularly checking for updates for your devices and network routers to keep your system secure and performing its best.
3. Don’t access your surveillance system from a public network
Never log into your surveillance camera feed while you’re connected to public Wi-Fi. Hackers can easily access information through shared networks, including your video surveillance system. If you intend to remotely access your security cameras and footage, invest in a virtual private network (VPN). A VPN creates an encrypted connection, making it extremely secure and difficult for hackers to identify valuable data.
4. Set up two-factor authentication
Many surveillance system companies now offer two-factor authentication. This extra security measure helps prevent your cameras from being hacked by sending you a temporary, one-time passcode via text message, email or phone to use in addition to the password needed to log into your surveillance system. That way, if a hacker obtains your password, they still won’t be able to access your cameras unless they also have the one-time passcode.
