4 TYPES OF SECURITY CAMERAS AND WHEN TO USE THEM

Security cameras deter criminals, catch thieves in the act and help authorities identify suspects. However, not all cameras are created equal. Knowing the differences between security cameras can help you pick the best ones for your home or business. Here are four types of security cameras and the best ways to use them.

  1. Fixed security cameras
As their name implies, fixed security cameras are installed in a fixed position and cannot move. This means the camera only records a single area. However, most fixed cameras are equipped with a wide-angle lens for maximum field of vision.

These types of cameras are affordable and easy to mount. However, they can’t capture anything happening outside the frame. Moreover, the only way to enlarge the video or image is by digital zoom, which pixelates and degrades the image quality.

  2. PTZ security cameras
Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras can move side-to-side and up and down to adjust their fields of view. For example, an operator can move the camera using a remote control. Moreover, certain cameras can detect motion or human figures and follow them automatically. They can also be programmed to do manual patterns or tours of your property.

The most significant advantage of PTZ cameras is that they have a 360-degree field of vision. However, they can only capture what they’re pointing at. Therefore, it’s best to combine a PTZ camera with a fixed camera for maximum coverage. PTZ cameras are also much more expensive than fixed cameras.

  3. Virtual PTZ security cameras
Instead of the single-lens that most fixed and PTZ cameras have, virtual PTZ cameras have multiple lenses to achieve a 360-degree field of view. The simultaneous recordings are spliced together so the operator can see everything at once. The operator can also zoom in on any suspicious activity using any of the camera’s lenses.

However, the images from these cameras can become distorted. Plus, the camera’s features and functionality are very much dependent on the software you get.

  4. Colour night vision cameras
A recent security camera innovation, colour night vision cameras have larger apertures that allow more light into the camera. This enables you to capture rich, high-definition, full-colour images in low-light settings.

The advantage of using these cameras is that you don’t need additional lighting sources. These cameras can capture people’s faces and licence plate numbers with ease in minimal light.
